Olympic Officials Embrace A New Era as Athletes Are Able To Blog

Olympic athletes in Beijing this summer were given the thumbs up to blog by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

In an article by Guenter Deister, the IOC has acknowledged a "new era" and has allowed olympic athletes to blog about their olympic experiences during the Beijing Summer Olympics. Deister mentions that for years the olympic charter banned any journalistic work by athletes, but the new age of technology paired with the use of blogging during the 2006 Winter games in Turin has changed the minds of the IOC.

Despite the new acceptance for athletes blogging, there are some restrictions. According to Deister, if an Olympian chooses to blog, it is not allowed to contain interviews, photos or vidoes from areas reserved for accredited people. The IOC also states that while a photo of the athlete is acceptable, it cannot be from an Olympic area.

A direct quote from IOC rules states:

"The IOC considers blogging as a legitimate form of personal expression and not as form of journalism".

Comments:
A very good post.

Of course the IOC is both right and wrong about blogging. Many blogs are a form of journalism, many more are just a form of personal expression. Sometimes it is hard to tell the two apart. In the case of these athlete blogs it may be personal expression, or it may be a way of generating publicity and promotional contracts.
