Zach’s Punishment For Being a Homosexual

According to the article entitled, “Gay Teenager Stirs a Storm,” by Alex Williams, a boy’s parents disapprove of their son’s sexuality that they send him to an institution that “cures” one’s homosexuality.

Zach is a 16 year old boy who confessed to his parents and the world that he is a homosexual. His parents reacted to his confession as though he had a serious mental disorder that needed to be treated. They enrolled him in a fundamentalist Christian program called Refuge, where they specialize in changing one’s homosexuality through God’s teachings. Zach was shocked and hurt by their reaction that he posted a blog about his dilemma on his MySpace account.

People who read his blog were also outraged that he was being sent against his will to change his sexuality. As a result, many bloggers who sided with Zach started an online community called the Queer Action Coalition “which organized … protests at Love in Action,” an institution that is affiliated with Refuge. This online community reveals the power of blogging. It offers hope that people like Zach will be accepted by society even though his parents have chosen not to.
