To car theft or not to car theft

"Crime statistics are not the only sign that today's gaming generation is doing much better than the generation raised during the last cultural panic — over rock 'n' roll. Math SAT scores have never been higher; verbal scores have been climbing steadily for the last five years; nearly every indicator in the Department of Education study known as the Nation's Report Card is higher now than when the study was implemented in 1971."

The defense of the video gaming is very much implemented in the article Hilary vs. the x-box. Thrill seeking juveniles that love car jacking games such as grand theft auto seem to enjoy the negative aspects of the game. Though these aspects are negative, they still allow these same juveniles to reinact the crime on theri television screen rather than in real life.

The national carjacking rate has dropped substantially since "Grand Theft Auto" came out.

Comments:
Be careful with statistics. The author of the article is using statistics to make his point, but there is not necessarily a correlation between the statistics he cites and gaming. Perhaps carjacking would have declined more if GTA had been banned. Avoid conclusions based on statistics that may or may not have any correlation with the question. What we can document is that there is a debate over the role of these games in raising our youth. Both extremes in this argument (gaming is good vs, ban the games)are suspect. The reality is that playing of violent crime filled games by millions of young people is probably not a good sign for our future; on the other hand, these games alone do not create little delinquents and it is certainly possible to raise a good kid who plays GTA.
