Video Games being to Violate

In the article Hillary vs. XBox: Game Over it talks about the issues of video games being to violent. This young man wrote Hillary a letter because she called for a study on the effects on video games and children. One of those violent games was "Grand Theft Auto". In Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas it shows explicit sex and how this could shape a child's values and development if they are in the young stage especially 12, 13, and forteen years old. Video games are very popualar where they are playing hours after hours and kids not having any interest in school and homework becuase they want to play video games. On the other hand they ar stating that video games are useful and helpful to children. "That difficulty is not merly question of hand-eye coordination; most of today's games force kids to learn complex rule systems, master challenging new interfaces, follow dozens of shifting variables in real time and prioritize between multiple objectives". Also they state that their has been a drop in violent crimes, car jacking, and crime statistics are doing better as well. SAT scores have went up and the Nation's Report Card is higher now as well. It shows from this article that video games aren't as bad as them seem to be. It seems that video games are in a way helping children to do better on their SAT's and since they are playing the game they siad that their is not much of a need to car-jack a car when they can do it on the video game. "Itsn't it possible taht kids no longer need real-world environments to get those thrills, now that the games simulates them so vividly". I thought this was a cool and interesting article and I never looked at video games in this view I always thought they were annoying and violent.

Comments:
Well, they are "annoying and violent" but also fun and troubling. I don't know that we can link improve performance on the SAT's to gaming. Be careful about direct causal connections. Can we say that gaming may have good effects as well as bad? Yes, in moderation. Should we, as a society be concerned about the influence of gaming on the younger generation? Yes, but censorship is probably not the a viable solution to the problem of violent content.
