A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace
John Perry Barlow, the author of "A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace ", clearly makes his stance in defending the independence of cyberspace from the government. In other words, if the people can have a declaration why can't the travelers of cyberspace?
The begining lines of Barlow's declaration were the most compelling to me:
Right from the begining of the article, he is making his point that cyberspace is the technology of the future and that it will more than possibly take over those of the "past."
Barlow goes on to say that the future of cyberspace will continue to progress and in addition, as it does no regulations from the government are needed nor wanted. Part of this declaration gave me the idea that not only is Barlow trying to "declare independence" for cyberspace but also trying to break away from the way the government runs society.
Basically what i got from most of the article, was the warning that cyberspace is creating or at least offering this "new world" to people.
The begining lines of Barlow's declaration were the most compelling to me:
"Governments of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and steel, I come
from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind. On behalf of the future, I ask you of the
past to leave us alone. You are not welcome among us. You have no sovereignty
where we gather."

A good post.
John Perry Barlow clearly has a utopian idea of the future of the internet. Can governments prevent this new world of free interaction? Can the internet really be free from the limitations of political and economic institutions? And finally, is a society without rules even desirable? What does anarchy mean to you?

Clearly, society without rules should not be desirable to anyone, even though most people think that it would make their lives easier.
However, i feel like the internet is one of the most liberal things we still have. Websites can be made by anyone about anything and viewed by whoever. Although there are actions like parental controls and age limits for certain sites, in actuality it does not really stop anyone from making a site about anything or someone from viewing a site they want.
But i guess, soon enough government will come in to play a little bit more seriously and start regulating. However, i do not think they will even be able to take total control of our right to free interaction on the internet... that is anarchy!
