Second Life "is a virtual world developed by Philip Linden of Linden Lab that launched on June 23, 2003, and is accessible via the Internet. A free client program called the Second Life Viewer enables its users, called Residents, to interact with each other through avatars. Residents can explore, meet other residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, and create and trade virtual property and services with one another, or travel throughout the world, which residents refer to as the grid. Second Life is for people aged 18 and over".
Unlike other 3D virtual reality games i.e. Sims, Second Life is in a league of its own. You can connect with different people throughout the world and have the career you've always dreamt about. "Second Life does not have a designated objective, nor traditional game play mechanics or rules" you pretty much have the freedom to do as you please but yet still have fun and be creative.
Second Life also offers internal currency called Linden dollars which is used to buy, sell, rent or trade land or goods and services with other users. The virtual goods include buildings, vehicles, devices of all kinds, animations, clothing, skin, hair, jewelry etc. With these Linden dollars if you've ever wanted to be a fashion designer and own your own boutique you can definitely do that. Even if you wanted to be that guy who gets all the women because of your looks you can buy that too.
As far as success, Second Life has over 16 million registered users. Second Life is also used at different Universities in other country's as a learning tool for language, religion, music, arts, etc. There is also a Teen Second Life for ages 13-17.
Overall Second Life is exactly what it is meant to be a Second Life to fulfill any dreams or to become your alter ego. It is definitely an upgraded way of social networking.
